Safety Codes

ATTENTION ROCKETEERS!

Do you know that it is prohibited to launch model rockets from City of Calgary property?

By-Law 36/74

PARK USE

10.  (1)  No person shall, in a park, engage in:

  (d)  The shooting of a projectile of any nature

Park lands include green spaces, school and park reserves, City of Calgary parks, as well as school yards.

The Calgary Rocketry Association (CRA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the safe enjoyment and promotion of model rocketry. Presently, the CRA holds regularly scheduled model rocket launches outside of the City of Calgary.

Through the City of Calgary Parks and Recreation Department, the CRA is currently working towards obtaining a permit for the CRA to sponsor model rocket activities within the City at designated locations. We have a "Launch Policy" which must be followed.

Through the CRA , you can have the opportunity to enjoy the sport of model rocketry in a safe, and supervised environment.

Model Safety Code

For model rocketry there is one document that all flyers should become familiar with. The code is located on the CAR site under model rocketry safety code (under codes and regs).

There is also a larger document governing the rules to operate under across Canada. Be aware there are local bylaws that also need to be adhered to, many cities including Calgary have bylaws that prohibits model rockets from flying within the municipal limits. Check with your local municipality for bylaws against "projectiles".

High Power Safety Code and Regulations

On the high power side there is also a set of safety codes much like the model but but take into account the power that is being dealt with and altitudes these birds can reach. See the high power safety code on the CAR web site.

Because of the nature and inherent dangers that could be present if procedures are not followed. NRC (Natural Resources Canada) have regulations that must be followed, see High power regulations on the CAR site. There is a written test and certification procedures required to advance to the larger motors. This is intended to provide a safe environment for the participants, spectators and property.
